For each distinct area of your project where soil will be moved, enter the dimensions and the average depth of cut or fill. For a sloped area being leveled: the high side is cut (soil removed) and the low side is fill (soil added). If you are only cutting (like a pool excavation), enter only cut volumes. If you are only filling (like raising a low area), enter only fill volumes.
The combined cut-plus-fill total is what most grading permit thresholds are based on — though some jurisdictions use the larger of cut or fill, or measure only cut. Verify the specific calculation method with your local building or public works department.

Soil expands when excavated — this is called the swell factor. Clay soils typically swell 25–35% when disturbed. Sandy soils swell 10–15%.
